Pica

A sampling game for viticulture

Design an optimal sampling strategy to estimate the yield of vineyard plots before harversting using satellite-based vigour maps. Try to get as close as possible to the ideal plan across three vintages and three plots from the Domaine du Chapitre.

Pica is a serious game designed to support discussions around remote sensing data and their use in plot-level decision-making. It highlights the benefits of such data—particularly vigor data—through a concrete case: yield estimation in viticulture. Players will visualize vine vigour maps derived from multispectral remote sensing images, position sampling sites that they consider optimal, and will be informed on the quality of their sampling plan: yield estimation error and sampling time. Players will run as many new sampling plans as wanted to improve their scores. An optimal sampling scheme, derived from constraint programming research, will also be provided for comparison purposes.
